MAN POWER

Man Power, aka Geoff Kirkwood, initially emerged as an anonymous projectin 2013 via a succession of dark, chugging remixes, culminating with a debut EP on Correspondant. Conclusions were drawn, expectations set, and boundaries imposed. Never one to colour between the lines though, Kirkwood has gone on to show the complete picture of his sonic and thematic breadth via output for the likes of DFA, Optimo, Hivern Discs, SKINT, Permanent Vacation, ESP Institute and his own lauded Me Me Me imprint, which has regularly shed its skin in terms of outlook, artists and methods, with only the steadfast goal of supporting his friends remaining intact.

Creatively speaking, pinning down Geoff Kirkwood is a challenge. While possibly best described as playing what Resident Advisor described in 2018 as “Intergalactic House”, Kirkwood is as comfortable writing and presenting experimental symphonies, ambient hauntology and Audio Visual orchestral performances as Bed Wetter or delivering raucous kinetic Techno as MPX. For everything in between, he is Man Power.

Although unburdened by the need to bow to genre conventions, there’s still a common emotional core through Kirkwood’s creations that, paired with a penchant for the cinematic and absurdist, makes him stand out from other eclectically inclined peers. 2022 proved to be a typically unconventional year for the artist and saw him take timeout to write and stage a full experimental orchestral symphony, as well as being nominated as DJ Mag’s “Underground Hero” at their Best of British DJ Awards, and being profiled in the press for his many projects by everyone from The Guardian newspaper, to Resident Advisor and LA Weekly.

2023 now sees Man Power having returned full time to DJing and Production with gigs at places like the legendary Glastonbury festival or his residency at the hallowed Pikes Ibiza, multiple tours of Asia and The America’s, numerous Back2Back appearances playing with the likes of Special Request, Daniel Avery, Erol Alkan, Ewan McVicar, Prosumer & Sean Johnston, and a brace of EPs on labels including Nocturne, Echocentric & La La’s “Sound AsRecords”.

Despite 2023 marking the decade anniversary for the Man Power project, with an almost completely full tour diary and a forthcoming release schedule that takes in Rekids, Moxie Music, Make a Dance Records and Live at Robert Johnson all within just the next 6 months, Man Power appears set to be as relevant, and as inescapable, as he ever has been during the last 10 years.
