Greg Wilson – Reels of Steel – London

A reel treat this one, ahem.  Greg Wilson plays a Reels of Steel set alongside iconic figure Afrika Bambaataa next weekend in London, in association with Fred Perry Subculture.

Ticket Link and only £5 as well, its really a fairly simple choice…

Greg’s own thoughts on the event:

“Sub-Sonic Live is a key event for me on two fronts.

The first in presenting Reels Of Steel (where I add visuals to the music I play) for the first time in London. So far I’ve been developing the idea via a series of dates at Manchester’s Band On The Wall, and also within the festival environment, at Glastonbury and Bestival last year. This London appearance will be another step in this process, leading up to a planned Reels Of Steel UK tour in 2013, and eventually international dates. It’s a work in progress that will, I hope, become an increasingly important part of what I do.

On top of this, featuring on the same bill as Afrika Bambaataa, exactly 30 years on from the release of his seminal “Planet Rock”, which I regard as one of the 20th century’s defining recordings, setting the tone for the oncoming electronic dance revolution, whilst helping take Hip Hop global in the early 80s. This was a true hybrid, its impact, influence and inspiration an absolute gamechanger. On a personal level it’s a big one, for I finally get to meet the man who had such a bearing on my own DJ destiny, spinning Electro-Funk in the North of England back in ‘82, and taking a lot of stick from the black music purists for daring to play something so radically different as “Planet Rock”.

So, in a sense, the event represents both the past and the future for me, which is always the equation I’m looking to balance. From old school roots to new horizons, it all connects.”

This Ain’t Chicago

Richard Sen compiles an absolute belter of a compilation for the ever consistent Strut Records, all the info you need below. Check this one out..

Strut presents an all new compilation placing the spotlight on early house music and acid emerging from the UK during the mid to late ‘80s, ‘This Ain’t Chicago’. Compiled by respected DJ / producer Richard Sen (Padded Cell, Bronx Dogs), the album celebrates the heady era when UK producers were responding to the first wave of Chicago house and documents the underground clubs that first championed the music – as the early rave scene and acid house kicked in at London clubs like Shoom and Spectrum, deeper and darker house nights thrived like RIP at Clink Street, Confusion and The Jungle and in warehouse parties around East London. Manchester too adopted house music at an early stage, most famously at The Hacienda’s Nude night.

As well as an in-depth look at the music and the accompanying scene through the DJs and producers that were there, ‘This Ain’t Chicago’ investigates media and clubland’s attitude to the emerging sound during house music’s early days, as early resistance from London’s rare groove and hip hop scene gave way to an explosion of dance music and rave culture. Musically, the album draws on both underground classics and lesser known tracks including early outings by producer Julian Jonah, A Guy Called Gerald, Trevor Fung’s Playtime Toons, Eddie Richards and Ian B’s Rio Rhythm Band and Baby Ford. The compilation also celebrates a host of excellent but short-lived UK DIY labels including Ruby Red from West Midlands, G-Force out of Essex, Rhythmbeat, Chill and Catt.

“This album features many personal favourites and the tracks were particularly inspirational to me as a DJ and clubber at the time,” reflects Richard Sen. With current productions drawing heavily on early house sounds and production techniques, this album brings to light many previously unsung classics from the UK underground, still sounding as vibrant and relevant as during the early days of house.
