Hugo Capablanca

Hugo Capablanca is a charismatic and unpredictable DJ / producer who has been steadily building a reputation for his DIY and playful approach. His DJ sets and studio work reflect his wild and eclectic creative energy. An approach that has been maturing in his current home, Berlin. Hugo began his music career at the turn of the millennium, relocating to Berlin from his native Spain. Originally trained as a visual artist he was immediately inspired by his new home and landed a residency at the legendary club; Rio. He has grown to become a key figure in the Berlin scene while remaining somewhat of an outsider. His abandoning of boundaries and restrictions has led to him building an influential music bridge between Berlin and New York. Discovering the emerging talent of Willy Burns, Morelli, Lee Douglas and Lovefingers. Hugo was the first promoter to bring these disparate scenes across the pond to party together in Berlin. This connection has lead to Hugo starting his own label, Discos Capablanca. Releasing left field dance music from artists like Grackle (Burns), Two Dogs in a House (Morelli & Summers) and the Mutant Beat Dance (TRAXX & Beau Wanzer with Eric D. Clark).
Since then Capablanca has developed a very particular sound, melting psyche, disco, industrial and other far out influences together to create a raw and organic whole that bends both body and mind. His sound can be easily recognised in his own productions, remixes and collaborations for labels like Hivern Discs, Cómeme, Correspondant & Astrolab. Legendary Chicago DJ and friend Traxx described Hugo as; “his own Universe, he is unique; he reminds me of Ron Hardy in that sense”.
Hugo is presently resident DJ at Salon Zur Wilden Renate in Berlin (at the infamous Paradisco parties). Recently, he has been working on a new project for John Talabot’s imprint Hivern Discs, with acclaimed spanish producer Marc Piñol crafting one of the hit singles of 2014 (C.P.I. – El Tunel / Proceso). Capablanca has been been touring with DJ Harvey, booked by the man himself for his own festival stage: Harvey’s Discoteque at Bestival. He continues to warp and jack dancers across the globe.
